Abstract
Dementia is one of the neurocognitive disorders that often occurs in the elderly and affects their cognitive abilities, behavior, and social functions. This condition requires special attention, where the role of the family as a caregiver becomes very important. The family is not only tasked with meeting the physical needs of the elderly, but also providing emotional and psychological support. This study aims to analyze the role of the family as a caregiver for the elderly with dementia, including the responsibilities, challenges, and impacts on the quality of life of both the elderly and the caregiver. The method used is research literature by collecting and analyzing data from various scientific journals, reference books, and academic articles. The results of the study show that the family plays a role as the main source of care for the elderly with dementia, including in managing daily activities, health monitoring, and decision-making related to treatment. However, this role often brings emotional, physical, and financial burdens for caregivers. In addition, challenges such as lack of knowledge about dementia, limited access to health services, and social stigma burden the family. Support from professionals, special training, and social assistance are needed to improve the quality of care and ease the burden on caregivers. In conclusion, the role of the family as a caregiver for the elderly with dementia is very crucial, but requires collaboration between the family, community, and health institutions to ensure optimal care.
